An amazing photographer friend, Daron Jackson, has tirelessly coordinated an online art auction site to help raise funds for Haiti relief. See her blog for a link to 15 macro floral prints I've donated to the auction (grouped into three sets), plus a lot of other great art work by fellow artists on which you can bid.

Daron has grouped my prints into sets, so there is one set of five bee macros (each print is a 5x5" silver halide color print matted to fit a frame 8x10," frames not included) and two separate sets of five floral macros (each print is a 4x6" silver halide color print matted to fit a frame 8x10," frames not included). Even without frames, the starting bid for a set is lower than you might expect, only $10! The starting bids on all the art work on the auction site are very affordable, it's worth a look!

While I was traveling in Idaho to visit and take black and white landscape photos, I was hired to do a senior portrait of a young man named Justin. Here's a favorite shot from that very hot day (it was about 100 degrees during our shoot), but doesn't he look "cool!" While we were out driving around looking for locations to shoot, we ran across this random pile of huge cement pieces and beams of wood by the side of the road. It ended up making an interesting background.

Baby Portrait: Cailyn in Tacoma, Washington

Last weekend I had the great pleasure to photograph 3-month-old Cailyn and the rest of her family in Tacoma, Washington. What a cutie! She's a lively, vivacious girl and was a real trooper and stayed awake for several different set-ups. So we got a nice variety in her marathon photo session.

Even the strongest of us need a little cat nap along the way, here Cailyn catches a few winks in her beautiful mother's arms.

And of course we had to get some photos of big brother...

I love the delicate little way she held her hands...

And this final shot I've added a bit of grain and color effects to accentuate her delicate features.

PSA Gold Medal Won for Best Monochrome Fine Art Black and White Print!

I'm so excited I just had to share, I just found out I have been awarded a PSA (Photographic Society of America) Gold Medal for Best Monochrome Print in the PSA-sanctioned International Exhibition of Photography at the Oregon State Fair!

The print is titled "La Cigale Homage." It's an homage to one of my favorite photographers, Frank Eugene, based on his photogravure, "La Cigale," made in 1900. Frank Eugene's work is representative of one of my favorite periods in photographic history, the Photo-Secession movement which promoted photography as fine art in general and photographic pictorialism in particular. I have a detail scan from my print here. Sorry it doesn't show the whole print, I scanned the 11x14 print on a small scanner--I wasn't expecting to post the image but was just sending the scan by e-mail to the model.

I also won an Honorable Mention Award in the same show for the following print, "Uncaged," which is a sister image to the one above. This also shows just part of the whole print.

Both prints can be seen at the International Exhibition of Photography in Salem, Oregon, during the Oregon State Fair, August 28-September 7, 2009, in Cascade Hall.

Update: For those friends and family that are in the area and are interested in attending the awards presentation ceremony, it will be held from 7-8 p.m. on Friday, August 28th, in Cascade Hall.

For those of you who might be curious about technical details for the two prints:
"La Cigale Homage" and "Uncaged" are both silver emulsion prints made on Foma Fomatone MG CLassic 542 Chamois paper--a warm-tone, triple-weight, variable contrast paper on a cream-colored rough-textured, matt, fiber base. They were both developed in Amidol paper developer (mixed from scratch), and toned with a pre-sulphiding sepia method (as outlined by Tim Rudman in his book, "The Photographer's Toning Book: The Definitive Guide.")

Sadly this particular paper has been discontinued, it is no longer available on the rough texture which gives it its charm. It is still being made under the same name, but only on a smooth paper base.

Buescher Friends & Family: Memorial for Claude, 1990-2009

We are sad to announce that on July 29, 2009, our cat Claude passed away. He was 19 1/2 years old.

Like his Persian ancestors before him who ruled the royal houses of Europe (Claude is Himalayan which originated as a cross between Persian and Siamese cats), Claude ruled our house with dignity, love, and a bit of mischief thrown in for good measure. He will be missed. Herein I share snapshots taken throughout his very long feline life.

Anyone that knows Claude knows this pose all too well. Conor and BJ Bradford would throw coins on Claude's tummy and would see how much change would disappear into Claude's tummy fur before he'd get tired of the game and get up. I think the most was close to $5.00 in change!

For a time Conor and I lived in an apartment where we couldn't have pets, and Claude and Sierra went to live with Conor's parents (while Berkeley went to live with Conor's brother and sister-in-law, Brendan and Lisa). The snapshots below are from Christmas at Conor's parents--it was either 1994 or 1995:

We eventually got a house of our own, and Claude came to live with us again. Not long after this we added a new member to our family, Ruthie the Rottweiler/German Shepherd mix. At the beginning they didn't get along AT ALL. But after awhile, they became tolerant of each other as can be seen below:

For fun Claude memories, I would be remiss if I didn't include our Christmas magnet we sent out one year. Claude would brave the most gross indignity for love of his humans!

I'm a bit superstitious, and one of my good luck superstitions is that whenever I get a new piece of photographic equipment, the first shot taken with it has to be of a pet. Claude was my model for many a piece of equipment. A selection from these shots is featured below:

These last two images I had taken just one week before Claude passed, not knowing the end was coming so soon. I had prepared them with my usual photo business logo border for posting to my blog and hadn't quite gotten a chance to post them when Claude passed. I add them here now as part of his memorial. He was handsome to the very end. I miss him so much. Thank you for indulging me this long homage to our cat, he was a significant part of our lives and his passing leaves a huge hole in our hearts.

I photographed a lovely new baby girl, Navelle, today in Corvallis. She's just 18 days old and is a beautiful, sleepy little angel!

Children's Portrait: Andrew & Nick in Tacoma, Washington

I participated in a Montessori School auction in Tacoma, Washington, by donating a free photo shoot. What great fun I had with the person who bid on the photo shoot, Olga, and her sons, Andrew and Nick (and of course, Buddy)! She suggested we shoot in Point Defiance Park near Tacoma, what a beautiful location. It made my head spin with all the options for places to shoot in the park. It's 702 acres big!

And speaking of big, both Nick and Andrew have big, beautiful personalities! Andrew has a bright, pinball-machine smile and reminded me of Marlon Brandow. While Nick is a soul that runs deep, reminding me so much of James Dean.

Thanks so much for a great day photographing in the park, it was a pleasure to get to know you all.

Illustration: Ferguson's Mechanical Paradox Orrery

I have had the great pleasure of being hired to shoot two beautiful examples of a hand-machined "Ferguson's Mechanical Paradox Orrery" made by Jim Donnelly of Albany, Oregon. He has written one article about the build process for "Digital Machinist" magazine and co-wrote another for The British Horological Institute Limited's "Horological Journal" and asked me to shoot photographs to accompany his articles.

Here's a quick description about the orrery written by Jim:
"Designed circa 1750, the core of the mechanism depends on gears of differing ratios to illustrate the movement of the moon's nodes and apogee as the earth revolves around the sun. It can be used to illustrate many things, including eclipses." Jim further states he was inspired by Ian Coote, see Ian's page about the orrery here.

Here is the video slideshow of the builders I've photographed to date for the Oregon Custom Bicycle Framebuilders Project (there are more images in each builder's section of this video slideshow than I've already posted in previous blog entries). So there'll be some new images here for you to see!

I've had a great time with the project so far, and plan to continue adding to the project with visits to other builders in Oregon. A big thank you to all of the builders who are pictured here and to those I'm still working with to schedule a shoot time. You are all amazing, talented artisans and I'm so pleased to have the opportunity to work with you!

And finally I'd like to say how jealous I am of all of you that are able to take your pets to work. How lucky are you to share your work day with your pets--they are all so sweet and cuddly!

Here's a shoot that seems it'd be pretty easy from the outside (since I'm married to one of the builders, Conor, one would think I'd have an all-access pass!). But it's hard to get a portrait where they're both being serious at the same time! It's all good fun, though.

And speaking of shop pets, Fred Cuthbert of Wolfhound Cycles in Talent, Oregon, says this on his website of his company's namesake:

"The Wolfhound head badge was designed in the likeness of the factory mascot, Duncan. After nine years of loyal friendship I recently lost him to bone cancer. My fondness for him was (and is) strong enough to inspire the name of the company. Like the Irish Wolfhound breed, Wolfhound Cycles are strong and fast. Being the tallest breed, the name also reflects my affinity for 29” wheels. Another reason I knew the name was perfect is the fact that Wolfhounds are one of the oldest breeds, having left their footprints in the history of royalty and heroics."

His dedication to the Wolfhound (Katie is pictured below with Fred) is rivaled only by his dedication to creating the best ride of his customer's life!

In the Oregon bicycle framebuilders project, Rob English of English Cycles in Euguene, Oregon, wins the prize for "most unusual shop pet." Horsie might not actually fit well in the shop, but often joins Rob none the less.

Rob doesn't specialize in any one particular bike build--he builds recumbants, racing frames, even a kid's first bike (that's what he's building here). His favorite build material is steel, and the racing frame he built for himself comes in at a remarkable 12 pounds!

I'm very pleased to be starting an exciting project documenting an amazing group of artisans. I'll be creating environmental portraits and photo essays of various custom bicycle framebuilders throughout the state of Oregon.

I'm particularly excited about my first subject, Andy Newlands of Strawberry Bicycle in Portland, Oregon. He has been handbuilding lugged, steel bicycle frames (brass brazed) for 38 years now. This was a very fun shoot indeed! It's always exciting to work with interesting props, and it doesn't get much more interesting than a Ford GT40! Cee Cee's pretty racy, too!

We were going for a 70s aloof model kind of look, and sometimes it was hard because Cee Cee couldn't stop giggling. Anyway, her husband was happy with the results, it's his mechanics jacket she's posing in.

I'm starting a new category of portrait on my blog, "Fantasy Photography." It'll include lingerie/boudoir shoots (for brides, anniversaries, Valentine's Day, or "just because"), and "glamour" or fashion-photography style portraiture for people that want to have a sort of "dress-up" portrait session. I'm working with a great hair and make-up artist, Meaghan Mackey, of Aspire Design Salon (www.aspire-design-salon.com) to produce this type of portraiture. She's great to work with!

"Marie" was a fun, creatively satisfying shoot. I emulated a Sarah Moon Pirelli calendar shoot from 1972 which is marked by desaturated colors, soft focus, and large grain. I was very pleased with the final look, and Meaghan created a beautiful 1930s-style makeup that worked great for what I was trying to do. And of course Marie's natural beauty really shines through. Thanks, ladies, for the great day!

Travel Photography / Random: Memories of visits home to Idaho

So I've been going back through my photos from home to find photos of my dad and uncle who both passed away in the last several months, and found a few to share. I could only find one photo of my dad and uncle together, not the greatest composition, but I'm glad I have it none the less.

I'm also including some photos I forgot I had taken of my nieces and a few shots at Grandpa's. I miss home and do look forward to going there for my dad's memorial in April, even though it'll be hard. Bittersweet.

Sorry I've been away from the blog for several weeks. My father passed away the week after Christmas, and I haven't been feeling up to anything. I'm starting to get going again, though. I wanted to light her only by candlelight (I've never done a portrait with only candlelight before). It was a challenge but a lot of fun! I think it came out quite lovely. What a milestone! My paternal grandfather celebrated his 90th birthday on November 16th. I was lucky enough to be able to be there with him in Idaho to celebrate his big day along with other family members and friends. Here are a few of my favorite snaps from the day. Love you, grandpa!

Just a couple of recent examples of the photo keepsake jewelry I offer. This is the sterling silver "simple tile necklace" with garnet accent by Isabelle Chase Studios. Both of the images used for these necklaces are examples of my vintage, faded photo process--I think it adds to the antique keepsake quality of the pieces.

Of course, I can do beautiful, natural to vivid color for the photo image and I offer many styles of photo keepsake jewelry to appeal to a variety of tastes, from very contemporary to victorian. New Album Offering: "Brilliant" Glossy Metallic Sheen Photo Cover

In addition to leather, cloth and metal covers, I now offer a full-bleed photo cover album. The cover design is printed on photographic paper with a protective laminate coating that creates a beautiful, unique metallic sheen. From a single panoramic, full-bleed image spanning both covers to a large collage wrapping around the cover, the album can be designed to any taste or occasion.

Like my other album offerings, the "Brilliant" Album features true silver-halide Kodak Endura prints mounted on archival pages. I custom design the layout of the album with your image choices.

This album has excellent lay flat properties with the smallest page seam in the industry at less than 1 mm to keep it from interrupting the integrity of two-page spread designs.

Albums can be created for many subjects, not just weddings. Consider an album for children's portraits, maternity portraits, family portraits, senior portraits, music or theater performances, etc. Albums can also be designed to use as a guest album at your wedding--using images from your engagement portrait session, I can design an album that displays images on the left side and faded parchment paper on the right side for guest signing.

The "Brilliant" Album comes with a pillowcase slipcover packaged in a black presentation box. Like my other albums, it comes in various sizes and shapes--square, panoramic and rectangular.

Micah is such a sweet little baby boy! He's about 2 months old, and allowed me quite a lot of time to photograph him.

It wasn't until the very last shot that his sweet countenance started to falter. But I have to say I do love his little expression as he thought about getting grumpy.

I had a very enjoyable shoot with a lovely girl a few days ago. She's a big fantasy novel fan and has a huge backyard at her house. So I decided to set up the shoot in her yard and do post-processing on the images to make them dreamy and ethereal, to look like a place that could be part of a magical world.

Her sweet chocolate labs joined us for a few shots, too.
